COMPASS training for young trade union activists held in Trebinje

COMPASS national training course on human rights education with young people in Bosnia and Herzegovina “Gender Equality – Equal Society” was successfully held in Trebinje. Trade Union Education Center from Banja Luka, with support of the Youth Department of the Council of Europe, is one of only seven organizers of this type of course in 2020, whose emphasis is put on empowering young women – trade union activists.

24 trade union representatives learned how to contribute the improvement of the position of their female peers through building their own capacities, primarily by improving knowledge and skills related to gender equality. They will firstly transfer acquired knowledge within their trade union organizations, and then in wider community – by nominating and advocating for issues of importance to women.

– Main activities of the Trade Union Education Center are to strengthen position of young people and women in the society in order to become active in their local communities and beyond. At the same time, by cooperating with trade unions, we also strengthen the position of these groups in working environment, all through non-formal education. Last year we were a partner of Development Center for Youth from Serbia at the regional COMPASS training course, so the logical step has been to organize this course in Bosnia and Herzegovina this year, and we are very proud that Youth Department of the Council of Europe recognized us as a relevant partner, said Mr. Siniša Ćerketa, program coordinator of Trade Union Education Center.

During the opening ceremony, participants also had the opportunity to learn more on the Council of Europe itself and its dedication to gender issues through presentation and addressing of Mrs. Bojana Urumova, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Sarajevo, whose support we felt all along the preparation process.

Participants were especially introduced to COMPASS – Manual for Human Rights Education with Young People, which over the years has been the most important resource of activities in the field of non-formal education of the Council of Europe, along with guidelines how to use examples and information to further strengthen the position of women in the society.
